All rights reserved Individual differences in response to addictive substances may provide important clues to the mechanisms underlying drug action, addiction, reward, and reward-related disease states. Early psychoneuroendocrinological studies have led to the distinction of responders and nonresponders upon μ opiate receptor agonist administration. The systematic analysis of the gene encoding the μ opiate receptor reveals abundant DNA sequence diversity, suggesting numerous individually different forms of the gene. The present work illustrates the challenges of establishing complex genotype-phenotype relationships in the presence of high natural sequence variation, and provides some preliminary solutions. Progress in the future is expected to come from whole systems analysis-based approaches, integrating variation in all genes in all pathways.

Mizaj past, present and future

Temperament (Mizaj), as an individual factor, has great importance in traditional medicine and its use in diagnosis and treatment of diseases, as well as the individual lifestyle is very common. Since medicine moves toward Personalized Medicine, the root of individual differences will find its position in different aspects of medicine in early future. In traditional medicine, temperament is ...

Involvement of central opiate receptors in modulation of centrally administered oxytocin-induced antinociception

Objective(s): Oxytocin is involved in modulation of many brain-mediated functions. In the present study, we investigated the central effects of oxytocin and its receptor antagonist, atosiban on inflammatory pain. The contribution of opiate receptors was explored using non-selective and selective antagonists. Materials and Methods: The fourth ventricle of the brain of anesthetized rats was impla...

Evidence of morphine like substance and μ-opioid receptor expression in Toxacara canis (Nematoda: Ascaridae)

Toxocara canis (Nematoda: Ascaridae) is an intestinal nematode parasite of dogs, which can also cause disease in humans. Transmission to humans usually occurs because of direct contact with T. canis eggs present in soil contaminated with the feces of infected dogs. This nematode has extraordinary abilities to survive for many years in different tissues of vertebrates, and deve...

The history relating to the changing nature of protected area management objectives: towards reconciliation with surrounding landscape

Natural areas have been reserved for thousands of years. However, the reasons for reservation have changed with time. Natural areas management objectives have changed from personal/individual human needs to environmental protection. Unlike old protected areas, new protected areas have multiple management objectives. The management objectives changed from protection for now to protection for the...

miR-33-5p Regulates CREB to Induce Morphine State-dependent Memory in Rats: Interaction with µ Opioid Receptor

The aim of the present study was to examine the hypothesis that miR-33-5p attenuates morphine state-dependent (StD) memory via the µ opioid receptor by regulating cyclic AMP response element-binding protein (CREB). The effects of post-training morphine and morphine StD memory and their interaction with pre-test naloxone were evaluated using a single-trial inhibitory avoidance paradigm. Then, th...
